Councils used to be key providers or local services throughout the UK, including pest control. They would have pest control officers who would visit local properties to help remove vermin.

Over the years, many councils stopped providing pest control. Those that still offer pest control services often charge fees for them.

At Essex Pest Proof, we understand that many homeowners think that the council is the first port of call for pest problems, but you may find that your local authority doesn’t offer pest control services, or that they charge for this service.

In many cases, the services offered are limited to specific pest species and a certain number of visits, which might not be sufficient to fully remove the infestation.

Is Council Pest Control Free?

In the past, pest control services from the council were often free at point of use, as the cost was often paid for from council tax contributions.

Today, most councils do not provide free pest control services, and you will need to pay a fee. Usually, payments need to be made at the time of booking your pest control appointment.

Some councils offer limited free pest control solutions, or will provide a discount for those on qualifying benefits.

In Essex, Southend-On-Sea City Council doesn’t provide any pest control services and nor does Basildon Borough Council, which covers Basildon and Billericay. Chelmsford City Council does offer some pest control services for a fee, with free rat control offered for homes of qualifying benefits such as council tax reduction benefits and child tax credits.

Essex Council Pest Control Charges

As highlighted, Chelmsford City Council provides limited pest control services and charges for these. These prices are correct at time of publication, are for domestic properties only and are subject to change.

Chelmsford City Council doesn’t provide commercial pest control treatments, meaning business leaders need to use a private company.

Disadvantages Of Using Council Pest Control Services

The main downside to using local council pest control is that they often don’t provide the services you need. Even in Chelmsford, the services are limited to just 4 pest species, and won’t help with other pests. As such, if you have a different pest problem, you will need an alternative option.

Additionally, councils often have long waiting lists for pest control treatments, meaning you could be waiting weeks or even months. During this time, vermin can cause significant property damage and pose a health risk to you and others in your home.
