What to do about pests in your property

At some point, most landlords will have to deal with a pest control problem in their rental properties. We can provide free advice to both landlords and tenants in preventing pests and what to do if your property has a pest control issue.

What steps can landlords take to prevent pest control problems?

An infestation will result in landlords having to contact a pest control company. The costs incurred in both pest control treatments and possible loss of rental income while the infestation is dealt with will soon multiply.

Landlords can however take steps to reduce the risk of pests:

  • Ensuring the property is in a good state of repair and maintained
  • Providing good storage for refuse both inside and outside of the property
  • Pest control survey before change of tenancy

What should landlords do if an infestation occurs?

If there is evidence of an infestation in your property contact us, and we will offer free advice, and arrange a pest control survey. We will provide you with a full report highlighting any problems and recommendations to ensure the immediate infestation is controlled, and implement measures to prevent issues happening in the future.

    Moth Control FAQs

    What Do Moths Eat?

Each moth species is different, but the common clothes moth, the most prevalent pest moth species in the UK, eats natural fabrics, including silk, wool, velvet, leather and others. Indian meal moths, also known as pantry moths, eat dried foods such as grains, pasta, rice and flour.

Why Are There Moths In Your House?

Moths will enter through open doors or windows, and once inside, they will look for a reliable food source. If they find natural fibres or unsecured dried foods, they will make themselves at home and start to breed.

What Is The Moth Life Cycle?

The moth life cycle involves 4 stages: egg, larva (caterpillar), pupa (cocoon), and adult moths. While most DIY moth control products kill adult moths, they are usually ineffective against the other 3 stages. It is at the larval stage that moths are the most destructive, as they need a lot of protein to build their cocoon. Essex Pest Proof can eradicate moths at all life cycle stages.

How Can You Tell If You Have A Moth Infestation?

Seeing a few adult moths doesn’t necessarily mean you have a moth problem. Instead, look for signs such as bare patches on carpets, holes in clothes, silk tunnels, larvae, moth eggs or a strong musty smell. If you’re unsure if you have a moth infestation, contact Essex Pest Proof to discuss your pest problem and how we can help you fix it.
